Measurements: Length 20 1/4 inches; Pendant drop is 3 inches long, excluding the gemstone it is suspended from (when the stone is included it is 3 3/4 inches long).
Size of largest central stone (above pendant) is 7/8 inch (22mm) long X 3/4 inch (19mm) wide.
Large Scottish necklace. 19 agate gemstones in a collette pinchbeck setting. Colours range from white through shades of orange / cornelian to dark brown, beautifully
mottled and marbled. The glow of some of these stones cannot be depicted by the 'photos. Each rectangular segment is seperated from the others by a small chain and
pinchbeck bead. Original clasp with tongue.
Suspended from the central stone is a cross pendant. It consists of 4 round agates of various colours, including most unusual yellow and a kite-shaped carnelian
drop. Edges with pinchbeck decoration. A metal chain adds to security and strength. The pendant could be removed and worn seperately, making an entirely new jewel,
while the string of rectangular gems would be just as impressive with or without it.
The necklace is stunning and is especially suitable for a big lady as it is unusually big itself. Queen Victoria would have loved it (her admiration for this kind
of jewellery was well-known).
Condition is good. "lines" in the white gems are part of the marbling and not cracks/damage. We found no damage of any sort.
CJ Bell's book on Victorian Jewelry, page 77, has a longer hardstone necklace priced at $16200.-
