Approx 6 1/2 inches to top of finial.
Classic barrel shape Cream ground. Profusely handpainted with flowers with a strong Japanese influence as can be seen by the types of flowers and the extraordinary arrangement around the vase. The flowers wind around the jar from above and below; some tiny, some large. No symmetry - another Japanese influence. The colours and gilding are outstanding. It was widely recognised that the best artists of the period worked at Doulton Burslem and they won many prizes for their work.
Silver plate lid and bail and tri-foil handle. The lid is engraved with flowers that echo the work on the body of the barrel.
Marked underneath as follows: Doulton Burslem mark in the center, without the word England, as used before 1891. Impressed Doulton and I-85. Handwritten in puce near the rim: A monogram for the artist that is KJ or JK and A1787.
Very good condition. No chips/cracks/damage/restoration. Painting is clear and unworn. Silverplate in good shape.
